Rodent Management

Rats have lived in close association with man ever since the down of civilization when he gave up his nomadic life and settled down to farming and other occupation with a roof over his head. In spite of living close to man and sharing his food and his abode, rats have always remained undomesticated. They have destroyed his food and property and carried disease to him, and have proved to be one of his most formidable enemies in the animal kingdom.

There are four important species of rodent:

Roof Rats

Roof Rats :

are excellent climbers and are usually found in the upper parts of structures. Inside, they prefer to nest in elevated areas such as attics and ceiling voids, but they can also nest on lower floutside, they usually nest above ground in trees, in dense overgrown vegetation, or in piles of wood or debris. Roof rats prefer fresh plant material such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and tree bark. They are frequently associated with avocado and citrus trees. Garden snails and dog and cat kibble are also favorite foods.

Norway Rats :

Norway Rats

do not climb as readily as roof rats and are usually found on the lower floors of structures. Inside, they nest in wall voids and crawl spaces, in storage rooms under seldom-moved materials, or in any cluttered area that is little used. Outside, they nest in the ground in burrows or in unused sewers or storm drains. Norway rats prefer foods high in carbohydrates or protein but will eat almost anything including non-food items such as soap.

House Mouse :

are smallest species of the rat and is a good climber. Generally found in inside area they nest in wall voids and crawl spaces, in storage rooms under seldom-moved materials, or in any cluttered area that is little used.

Bandicoots :

are large sized and most aggressive rat. They are active burrower and is much responsible for much structural damage to the storage buildings, ground, flooring and also spoils stored products.

Methods of Treatment :

  • Proofing:

It consist blocking of rodent ways and fixing of Rat Guards on drainpipes. This technique restricts the access of rodent in an area.

  • Trapping :

It consist trap placement on rodent runways to catch the rodent by using Glue boards or Snap Traps. This method is effective when the place is infested with a limited number of rodents. Trapping is done to inside premises if required it will be done to outside sensitive areas

  • Rodenticide Baiting :

It consist trap placement on rodent runways to catch the rodent by using Glue boards or Snap Traps. This method is effective when the place is infested with a limited number of rodents. Trapping is done to inside premises if required it will be done to outside sensitive areas

  • Check up Service :

The check up will be done on next day of trapping or baiting service to see the result of service and to destroy the dead rats to dumping area or to buried them in safe way.

  • Rodent Bait Station Placement :

It is the important constituent in chemical and mechanical control of Rodents. It is a rectangular metal box in which Rodent Bait or Glue Board is kept.

  • Rat Guards :

Are the powder coated galvanized metal sheet fitted systematically over the pipes which avoid the rats to climb over the pipes and enter in to our property and can damage our valuable things and can contaminate food material.
